Stewart Legere is a queer artist from Halifax, Canada, and an ensemble member and Artistic Associate with Zuppa Theatre Co. — with whom he has created and performed work for nine years. He is also co-founder and Artistic Director of The Accidental Mechanics Group. His solo show El Camino or The Field of Stars debuted in the 2011 Queer Acts Theatre Festival and ran at Videofag in 2013. Later that year, in residence at Videofag and The Tyrone Guthrie Arts Centre in Annaghmakerrig, Ireland, he began working on Let’s Not Beat Each Other To Death (in collaboration with Canada’s National Arts Centre) — which has subsequently been presented at Stages (Halifax), OUTstages (Victoria), SummerWorks (Toronto), PuSh (Vancouver), and FTA (Montreal). He was voted Best Male Actor in Halifax’s The Coast Magazine’s annual “Best Of” issue for 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015. He is a two-time Robert Merritt Award winner — most recently for his portrayal of Charlotte Von Mahlsdorf in Doug Wright’s I Am My Own Wife. In film, he starred alongside Tanya Davis in Andrea Dorfman’s HEARTBEAT which debuted at TIFF. As a musician, he is a vocalist with orchestral pop outfit The Heavy Blinkers, and is currently completing his debut solo album Sing With The Birds Who Stay; Quiet The Station Today. His work is fascinated with sexuality, intimacy, inter-personal relationships, the destruction of persona and the celebration of performance.
